Background The Yuè dialects (Yuèyǔ 粵語 / Yuè fāngyán 粵方言) refer to a group of Chinese dialects spoken mainly in the central and western parts of Guǎngdōng Province, the southeastern and central parts of the Guǎngxī Zhuàng Autonomous Region, as well as in Hong Kong and Macau. Yú Mǐn 俞敏 was born in Tiānjīn on November 11, 1916 and died on July 2, 1995 in Běijīng at the age of 79. While his family hailed from Shàoxīng 紹興 in Zhèjiāng, already his great-grand-father had resettled to Tiānjīn, where his father, an engineer, worked for the Tiānjīn Railway Company.
