There is some confusion as to whether his name was Muḥammad al-Amīn, as he is called in the correspondence of the Mahdi, or al-Amīn b. Muḥammad, as he is described in a contemporary Turco-Egyptian document. Professor P.M. Holt (personal communication) believes his name may have been changed by the Mahdi. In later sources, he is almost invariably called Muḥammad al-Amīn.
