As its rapid economic growth continues apace, China’s environmental problems are increasingly becoming the world’s problems, too. The earth could not support the global population if every Chinese gobbled up resources at, or even near, the current level of the average citizen in wealthier, developed countries.1 As David Fridley, deputy group leader of the China Energy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California has noted, China’s huge carbon emissions have the potential to adversely affect the rest of the world.2
