The son of Hernando de Orozco and María de Menae, Alonso spent his childhood in Oropesa, Talavera de la Reina and Toledo, where he was a page (seise) in the cathedral. His parents sent him and his older brother Francisco to study in Salamanca, with the intention that they should become priests. Francisco died before he could complete the novitiate, but Alonso made his religious profession in the Augustinian Order of Salamanca on 9 June 1523.
