Commentary

Subject: 1Kgs 22:1-28; Jer 6:14; 8:11; Ezek 13:10

Sammetar sent this letter to Zimri-Lim near the conclusion of the war with Eshnunna (cf. A.1610+ [4.63], ARM 10.157 [4.64], and A.1025 [4.65]). He hoped to convince the king of Mari that the peace that Eshnunna proposed was a ruse. Sammetar most likely opposed détente with the man of Eshnunna because he had a great deal to gain by the ongoing fighting with Eshnunna; he was a direct beneficiary of the nearby enemy lands that were recurrently robbed in the course of the war.1 Thus Sammetar relayed prophetic messages and convers…
