Herdsmen were necessary in all parts of Europe that had an agrarian land use system, for example in the Alpine economy, the pastures of the Puszta, migratory sheep-herding (see Transhumance), in pastoral economies that usually involved the livestock returning to the farmstead on a daily basis as well as woodland pasture with overnight accommodations for herdsmen and livestock (e.g., springtime pig-fattening on acorns , ox-herding in the forests of Bavaria and Bohemia, and cattle-pasturing in upland forests) .
