Radical Islamists have often filed charges of apostasy and blasphemy against secular Muslim intellectuals. Early in the twentieth century, for example, the charge of apostasy was brought against prominent intellectuals such as Tāhā Ḥusayn and ʿAlī ʿAbd al-Rāziq.
