Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Eastern Europe are a relatively new phenomenon, appearing only after the collapse of Communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the countries and regions where there are significant Muslim populations: Bulgaria, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Albania.
