Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as defined by the World Bank, are “groups and institutions that are entirely or largely independent of governments and characterized by humanitarian or cooperative rather than commercial objectives… private organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, or undertake community development” (quoted in Abdelrahman 2004, 41–2).
