In 1970, Turkish schoolgirls had no interest in sports. For example, in one of Turkey's most distinguished schools, 3 girls out of 25 willingly participated in the school's sports classes. The others persuaded doctors to give them false medical reports that would keep them out of class for an entire year. The boys in the same classes eagerly participated in sports. Sports was for boys.
