Caecilius Cyprianus became bishop of Carthage in North Africa in late 248 or early 249. If he was then middle-aged, a birth date of approximately 200 may be conjectured. Little is known of his early life, but it is generally surmised that he was from a wealthy Carthaginian family, had acquired a reputation ¶ as a rhetorician, and was among the intellectual elite of the city.
